Sustainable recovery requires extensive engagement in clinical therapies that serve two purposes: 1) to help a client recognize the underlying issues that contributed to substance use disorder, and 2) to establish new, healthy skills that help them maintain freedom from drugs and alcohol. At Spearhead Lodge, our clients participate in a range of complementary clinical therapies and services that give them the skills they need to succeed in life after treatment.
Evidence-Based Clinical Therapies
We utilize several evidence-based clinical therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and motivational interviewing. These three forms of psychotherapy equip clients with the necessary tools to experience freedom from addiction and empowerment to resolve the underlying issues that contributed to the development of addiction and make change in their lives.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps clients learn how to understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings and emotions, and replace negative self-talk with more positive, affirmative behavior. CBT is used to improve symptoms of a range of mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anger, and obsessions and compulsions.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) teaches clients to how to manage their emotions, stress and negative feelings, and improve interpersonal communication skills. It’s often used to treat those with anxiety, depression and borderline personality disorder by helping clients develop skills to process trauma and manage stress. This is achieved through mindfulness, improving interpersonal skills, and learning how to accept negativity and regulate emotions.
- Motivational interviewing (MI) taps into a client’s inherent desire to effect positive changes in their life. Instead of the therapist dictating solutions, client and therapist work together to come up with options, which fosters empowerment. MI also helps a client understand how their behaviors are impacting their ability to achieve–or not achieve–their goals. Eventually, a client experiences self-actualization and realizes that they are competent and capable of making positive changes in their life.
